The Motorola Razr 2022 has the potential to be the most exciting folding phone of the year, so it’s disappointing that so far it’s only been announced for China. But some leakers have chimed in to suggest that it will hit Europe and maybe even go global.
Roland Quandt – a leaker with a good track record – tweeted (opens in new tab) saying that “it’s definitely coming to Europe too”. They seem pretty confident of it then, and in an answer (opens in new tab) Ross Young – who also has a good history of leaks – stated that Motorola intends to sell a lot of them, so “there should be a global release eventually”.
This claim of a global release sounds more like speculation, but at least a European release seems likely, with a global one being very possible.
I have no idea why some media outlets are saying the “Motorola RAZR 2022″ is only available in China”.August 11, 2022
As always, we’d take these leaks with a pinch of salt, but both sources are reputable, and it always seemed likely that Motorola would release the Razr 2022 in other regions.
After all, this is one of Motorola’s flagship phones, and earlier models in the range had a wider rollout. The original foldable Motorola Razr arrived in the US, UK and Australia, while the Motorola Razr (2020) was sold in the US and UK. So it would seem strange if the Razr 2022 were limited to China.
The big question now is exactly when the Motorola Razr 2022 will have a wider launch, but we don’t think the company would expect too much.
Review: What the Motorola Razr 2022 has to offer
In case you missed our previous coverage of the Razr 2022, the phone has a 6.7-inch foldable 1080 x 2400 OLED display with a very high refresh rate of 144Hz, along with HDR10+ support.
It also has a 2.7-inch 573 x 800 secondary display and uses a powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM.
There’s also up to 512GB of storage, plus a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultra wide-angle camera, and a 32MP selfie snapper. The battery is 3,500mAh and supports 33W fast charging.
Most potential buyers will likely choose between this one and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, and on paper the Motorola Razr 2022 undoubtedly comes out on top. It has a larger coverage screen, a higher refresh rate, faster loading, more potential RAM, and more megapixels in its cameras.
However, Samsung’s phone offers better water resistance and can generally be more durable as it also uses Gorilla Glass Victus Plus and Armor Aluminum. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4’s battery is also slightly larger.
So there isn’t a totally clear winner, given that the main screen size and chipset are the same on both.
What can really come down is the price. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts at $999.99 / £999 / AU$1,499, and we still don’t know how much the 2022 Razr will cost, but for the Chinese price it might cost a little less than that.
Either way, they seem to be two of the best folding phones you can buy – assuming they live up to their specs.
