It appears that Avowed, Obsidian’s first-person RPG, is in trouble, with several key players on the team changing roles and leaving the project. However, it may still appear on Microsoft Xbox and Bethesda Showcase tonight.
Revealed in July 2020, Avowed looks like Obsidian’s answer to Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls games. It’s a first-person RPG set in the fantasy world that the team established through their Pillars of Eternity games. However, since the first reveal trailer, Microsoft has been very quiet about the game’s progress. Considering it’s one of the Xbox Series X exclusives from a primary studio, it’s been a cause for concern for Xbox fans.
Two leaks today suggest that Avowed will appear on Microsoft’s Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, the next big show that is part of Summer Game Fest, and that we shouldn’t expect to play the RPG anytime soon.
The first leak, detected by Tom Warren in The Verge (opens in new tab), was from a Microsoft employee posting on LinkedIn about games that would appear in Showcase. “Viewers can expect appearances from Xbox exclusive flagships Starfield, Forza Motorsport, Redfall and Avowed,” the now-deleted post stated.

although since then confirmed by Matt Brown (opens in new tab)senior editor of Windows Central, that the employee took the text from the hub page of their site for the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase.
Of course, a showcase appearance doesn’t mean a game is nearly finished and that’s the case with Avowed, claims Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. In a now-deleted post, he says: “Avowed has gone through a few reboots and changed directors recently. I don’t know if he’ll be there today, but I wouldn’t expect to play for a while.”
According to the game director Avowed Carrie Patel’s LinkedIn Page (opens in new tab), she is still leading the project. Of course, if she’s recently changed roles, she may not have updated her LinkedIn yet, or it could be a different director, such as art or sound, although none of these surveys have revealed any recent changes.
As for why Schreier deleted his tweet, he it says (opens in new tab) “I just don’t want news sites and forums doing a whole thing about a Twitter reply I gave on my phone while grabbing bagels.” So don’t feel silly…
A recently confirmed departure from the team is Kate Dollarhyde who, until last month, was the senior narrative designer for Avowed. she took it to twitter (opens in new tab) in May to announce “After five incredible years at Obsidian, I am leaving the studio to pursue my personal creative efforts.” It is unclear who replaced Dollarhyde in Avowed.
