Dead Island 2’s reanimated body has appeared after years of silence and looks set to hit shelves early next year.
Clues that the elusive zombie-basher is still in development have appeared sporadically in the eight years since it was first announced, but a new Amazon listing (opens in new tab) suggests that the game will finally be released on February 23 next year. As seen by the Twitter detective Wario64 (opens in new tab)the description accompanying the listing (which has since been removed) also confirms some old and new details.
Dead Island 2 will be set in Los Angeles and will include six playable characters. You’ll be able to customize each one’s skills, using a skill system to create different builds. There will also be multiple varieties of zombies to attack, encompassing “dozens of distinct types of zombies, each with their own mutations, attacks, and hundreds of LA-themed variants.”
As for the plot, Amazon’s synopsis says you’ll play as a zombie apocalypse survivor whose natural immunity allows you to “enjoy the zombie within”. You and a team of other survivors will “discover the truth behind the outbreak” in what is described as a pulp adventure. The description also emphasizes the game’s violence, promising the combat to deliver “the most intense, visceral, and bloody first-person experience possible.”

Dead Island 2 coming out next year may look very different than what we’ve seen before. The long-awaited and long-delayed title has changed hands three times since it first emerged in 2014. ad trailer (opens in new tab).
Dead Island 2 was originally in development at Yager, the developer of Spec Ops: The Line, before Sumo Digital – the studio behind Sackbody: A Big Adventure – announced that it had taken over the project in 2016. In 2019, however, publisher THQ Nordic revealed Homefront: Revolution developer Dambuster Studios was developing the game.
We expect some heavy changes to have been made since Dambuster took over the project. For starters, Dead Island 2’s roster of playable characters has been expanded to six from the four initially announced in 2014. Screenshots on Amazon’s roster suggest that the sequel will focus on melee combat, just like the first. match.
According to the listing, the day one edition of Dead Island 2 will include the Memories of Banoi DLC pack, giving you an in-game baseball bat, club, weapon perk, and character skill card.
Given the sudden appearance of this Amazon listing and the proximity of the game’s release date, we wouldn’t be surprised if Dead Island 2 appeared at Gamescom 2022. While there will likely be no goats this time around, as memorable as the Goat Simulator 3 announcement was with his riff in Dead Island 2.
