Apple has always been happy to publicize the compatibility of its AirPods headphones with Android phones, but the company’s newly released AirPods Pro 2 buds aren’t working properly with Google’s latest Pixel handsets.
Multiple users in reddit (opens in new tab) reported encountering audio issues when using their AirPods Pro 2 with Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 7 devices. Specifically, a bug with A2DP offload – which refers to the audio decoding process sent over Bluetooth – is causing the audio to fade and stop after about 90 seconds of playback.
It’s still unclear whether the A2DP problem is on Google’s or Apple’s part, but users are clearly frustrated with the incompatibility of these supposedly high-end devices. “Freakin Google”, a poster from Reddit he wrote (opens in new tab)“I never had any problems with the OG AirPod Pros.”
Fortunately, there’s a fix for the problem – but it’s only a temporary fix and one that degrades the audio quality. If you are experiencing the bug, go to the Developer Options menu on the Google Pixel and press the ‘Disable Bluetooth A2DP Hardware Offload’ button (see below).
This, unsurprisingly, will disable Bluetooth A2DP, which in turn shifts the responsibility for audio compression to the phone rather than the headphones themselves. This lowers the audio quality a bit, but at the moment it seems to be the only way to keep the AirPods Pro 2 headphones working with the latest Google Pixel devices for longer than 90 seconds.
As 9to5Google (opens in new tab) notes, if the issue is occurring on Apple’s end, it will create another headache for AirPods Pro 2 owners who use Pixel as the only way to update AirPods with software patches is to pair them with iOS or macOS devices. If it’s a Google-related issue, it’s safe to assume that Google will release a simple fix for Pixel users soon.
Despite the compatibility bug, both AirPods Pro 2 and Google Pixel 7 have impressed us so far. We awarded the former four and a half stars in our review, calling the AirPods Pro 2 “an extremely valuable upgrade from Apple”.
As for the Google Pixel 7, we said its distinctive design, creative and capable camera, and smart user experience make it a great value flagship to buy in 2022 – so we’d expect Google or Apple to make both devices. work better together soon.
